Say what?

by Mocha Delight Email

There's been a lot of shit flying around lately. I'm not going to sugar-coat it. It's some shit flying around. OK? I just heard, and apparently it's not a rumor, that some people in the republican party want to bring back some jim-crow era laws. A representative, or rather the opening speaker Tancredo representing Colorado opened up the night at the tea party convention. Tancredo called Obama a "committed socialist ideologue," and referred to him by his full name, Barack Hussein Obama. Oh what a shame...

This Jim Crow BS did not come from the Democratic Party, it came from the the so called "TEA PARTY MOVEMENT" (OR THE KKK2.0)

Guy's you really should watch CNN or MSNBC from time to time doing so might keep you from slandering the Democratic Party.

Tom Tancredo wasn't referring to African Americans, he was goin' after hispanics. He has a big record of anti-hispanic oral diareha. The big plank in his 2008 presidential campaign was anti-immigration.

I'm not a Tancredo supporter (or Tea bagger) but I don't think it's crazy to have a simple literacy test administered prior to voting. It wouldn't have to be about being able to read or not but just to see how literate a voter is regarding the operation of our government.

I know it sounds good to say everyone should be able to vote, and they should. But before someone is able to use that power they should show that they're competent to do so.

Before the government issues a firearm license the recipient has to show they're competent to own and use a gun. A vote for elected officials is just as important (if not more so).

I'm 30yo and I have friends in my social circle that have no idea how many Supreme Court Justices their are. They don't know who their congressman/woman is and many don't know how many Senators each state has much less who they are.

These may seem like trivial points but do any of us (the ones that pay attention and taxes) want some knucklehead going into a voting booth and christmas treeing a ballot when they may help to elect some official that will enact policies that hurt us all?

Isn't it reasonable to expect someone to know the difference between a capitalist and socialist economy and consequences of each before voting on a candidate touting either?

I think that as free Americans we all have a responsibility to know how our government works and we should all be informed participants. If someone cant demonstrate that they're informed then they should have to forfeit they're voting privilege.

If their is a standardized test (at the federal level) administered to everyone, then I don't see how that is unfair.

One big problem in this country is our sense of entitlement. Everyone seems to know what they should get but no one wants to acknowledge the responsibility that comes with our freedom.

A little understanding of history and civics would fix a lot of this country's current problems within a couple election cycles.
